These were quite interesting! (I live with the recipient so I got to try one.) I imagined they would be more lemon bon-bon like in texture, where you suck the coating off and on the exterior for a little bit and they start to become chewy, but they were more like hard-boiled sucky sweets. They do soften a little, they're not so hard as gobstoppers but I wouldn't recommend trying to crunch them up unless it gets well towards the centre. I'm not into hard-boiled sweets though, if it's your thing then you'll love these. If you've tried Bourneville Rum + Raisin chocolate, that's the best way I can describe the rum flavour in this. It had just the right amount throughout, it neither became overpowering or faded to nothing at any point, it was always there at a pleasant level. One of the most interesting things about these is that the further towards the centre you get, you start to reveal crystalline layers of dessicated coconut. It melts away gradually so you get little bits now and again, while getting more of the coconut flavour alongside the rum. The centre is lasting, and although it feels fragile because of its crystal-like texture, I wouldn't recommend trying to crunch through it either. I also recommend being careful with how you lick it, as the crystal/coconut tips become quite spiky and if you're going to enjoy more than one at a time, they can be a little abrasive and the effect may stack. Overall a very interesting sweet with a clever 'delivery system' of the flavours, even if you're not into hard-boiled sweets I'd recommend them if you're intrigued as it's an almost Charlie and the Chocolate factory-type of fun, and if you can experience that in adulthood then why wouldn't you? I'd recommend getting them as a sharing gift so others can experience it and it will help to get them eaten if you're someone who has trouble getting through hard-boiled sweets.
